Is There a Difference Between Democracy and Democracy?
i think the founders would have less faith than we do in the wisdom of the majority. They had a better understanding of history than most people to day do. Government was actually more sophisticated than ours, even though we have electricity. The problem is that in the founding era, republican was a word poised against monarchy, not against democracy. This is a later invention. And so when people say, we're a republic, not a democracy, if you try to say that with the words as defined to day, and, say, 17 80, youwould be saying they're basically the same we are.
