There is never a point at which the Welsh conceive themselves as anything other than Welsh. But what I find surprising in many ways is how that sense of difference does not in fact become instrumentalised and mobilised against England. The upper echelons of Welsh society are increasingly drawn to strictly English modes of conduct, he says. And then those lower down the social order manufacturing a language to talk about alien exploitative anglicised landlords. It's something that we seem towards the end of the period and gives you a glimpse of where some kinds of political ideas are headed in the future.
