The Role of Mitochondria in Mental Health

Mitochondria play a very direct and powerful role in the production of neurotransmitters. Mitochondria make building blocks that get used to put these neurotransmitters together, but then they provide the energy to regulate the whole process. If you prevent mitochondria from being at a synapse, for instance, the neurotransmitters actually don't get released. Even if the researchers squirt lots of ATP in, which is kind of the energy source, energy alone isn't enough.
