With this new era of synthetic products, a lot of them were made from chemicals that were dangerous. mercury and arsenic, for instance, were very important components. Anoline, which was this coal tar product. And people did die as a result of them. Peopleer using water in wells near the dye factories where dying mysteriously. So there was a sense ande people are always scared of the new anyway, aren't they? I mean, people are always anxious about new technology. In the late nineteenth century, you see a real trend ar where people start to identify purple as this particularly toxic colour. And a colour can cause death.
