Bashar al-Assad's public persona has stayed the same since he became president in 2000. He comes across as a very reasonable guy who speaks English and wears well-cut suits, says Peter Bergen. "I don't ever recall seeing videos of him raising his voice and shouting about anything" A lot of people really hope that this guy was going to be a reformer, writes Bergen.
