The primrose path to macroevolution is an exercise in seduction. I'm trying gradually to wean the reader on to natural selection by going through a number of intermediate stages. The pea hen selects the pea cock in something like the same way as human breeders select friezy and cattle or white lignon hens. In other words, you would do artificial selection, which is what humans have done inadvertently at first reading dogs and cabbages and pigeons. And also experimentally there are numerous experiments where people have administered a selective pressure on populations of animals and plants that produced dramatic results.
