In the early part of the 20th century, illegal bookmakers learned which horses had run at the various racetracks. Organized crime figures leased phone lines from AT&T in order to transmit these race results. This ended up being a very big part of AT&T's business. It was something obviously AT&T didn't like to talk about too much. But basically these wire services were the whole idea behind the Kelly formula or Kelly criterion.
