Puritanism and the Witch Trials
puritanism emerged following the reformation of the sixteenth century. Puritans wanted to strip away anything that wasn't closely allined with the bible. Each member of the community was expected to pursue an austere life style founded on moral rigor. Could it be that there was something about puritanism in particular that left society such as am more predisposed to fears of witchcraft? I asked marian gibson, i think puritan societies are particularly prone to witchcraft accusations. And you can see that in england as well.
