The Foundation Myths of the Ukranians
Putin's version of the origin of rus, that it is ier is a state whose successor would be the russian empire. His argument is diametrically opposed to one made by ucranians who like to see their europeanness as rooted in ancient history. Both these are foundation myths, particularlyt the ucranian foundation myth which is absolutely essential to the Ucranian cause in this war. So is that why these historical myths are so significant, so potent in russia to day? Because they can be weaponized or utilized to work for current political aims? Or are they culturally significant as well? Were they both really?
