The soviet lunar programme is really falling apart by this time. To get ahead of the americans, even by two or three months, they send tortoises to the moon. They landed actually in the water, which is very unusual for space russian spacecraft. And when they were picked up, they had lost ten % of their body weight. Nobody quite knows why, although there was a limited amount of food and water.
