21 came under fire when former contestant James Snodgrass provided hard evidence the show had been fixed. Van Dorn went to such great lengths to assert his innocence that he actually volunteered to testify in front of Congress. He eventually did so on November 2nd, 1959 but by then all the public scrutiny had taken its toll. In light of his confession NBC ended its contract with Van Dorn and he tendered his resignation at Columbia University shortly after.
