In 18 53, mertilla found a permanent location for her school. It was the only place in d c where black girls could get an education beyond the elementary level. Mertilla's students had access to a library of over 15 hundred books and attended lectures with scholars from all over the country. Five years after its founding, six of the school students had become teachers. In 18 ty, the school was forced to close its doors due to the civil war and martillas worsening health. But in 18 63, congress re established the school through a congressional charter. And on december seventeenth 18 64, she died following complications from those injuries.
