As we move into the twentieth century, it might seem plausible that to the extent that american politics has become more populis or smallde democratic. But you make a very compelling argument that what drives this evolution, or at least an important drive of this evolution, is elite competition. And i think this is a a really important concept in political science. I think it's just much less appreciated in general political discourse than i think it should be.
