The sahaba used to work in the way we cannot describe, and they used to be scared that nothing would be accepted from them. We join between laziness and believing that our deeds will be accepted. If you are not watching what you do yourself, you don't even know the good deeds you did today or the bad deeds you did yesterday. You can't achieve this level of his hand and this level of righteousness unless you do one thing: look at your own self.
