The Rise and Fall of the Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan was a violent terrorist organization dedicated to upholding white supremacy. Its goal was to destroy black political power and terrorize Republican party leaders and voters during the 1868 election season. The worst violence took place in Opelusis in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana where roughly 250 black residents were murdered by Knights of the white Camellia. Black women though they could not vote did whatever it took to make sure that their husbands brothers and sons supported the Republican Party for years to come.
