How Did You Get Into Adaptogens?

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Tero Isokauppila. Tero is the founder of Four Sigmatic, a nature-centric Finnish-American company specializing in functional mushrooms, superfoods, and adaptogens.

Born in Finland to an agronomist father and nursing teacher mother, Tero was the 13th generation to grow up on the Isokauppila farm. There, he foraged for mushrooms and other wild foods while learning about nature at an early age. In this, he frequently channeled his middle name Tapio, the Finnish god of forests, animals, and mystics.

Following his early education on the farm, Tero later completed a Degree in Chemistry and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. In 2006, he won a Finnish innovation award for discovering that the sought-after Japanese culinary matsutake mushrooms also grow in Finland. In 2012, he left a corporate position to start Four Sigmatic.

Tero is a reputable source on superfoods, an expert on natural health, and has been a featured speaker, for example, at Summit Series, Wanderlust, Further Future, Culinary Nutrition Conference, and WME-IMG.

• Soviet researchers were trying to find ways to improve human performance the next day without any letdown. 
• After many studies, they found compounds that improve performance and recovery without the letdown in natural fungi, plants, berries, and roots. 
• To be an adaptogen, they need to be safe and non-toxic. 
• Also, adaptogens have to restore balance in the body.

[11:40] How Long Will It Take To Reap Benefits From Adaptogenic Mushrooms? 

• How long do you need to use something to reap benefits? 
• Usually, people will say thirty days or something along those lines.
• In reality, it depends on the desired benefits in your body. 
• If you have gut and autoimmune issues, you may be on a journey for a few years.
• You cannot heal gut issues within a month. 
• Skin will heal itself in about thirty days. 
• Energy production is instantaneous - if you want to increase energy, that can be done quickly. 

[15:50] What To Know About The Effects of Theobromine and Magnesium 

• Theobromine is one of the main compounds in real chocolate or cacao.
• Theobromine is a sister compound to caffeine. 
• Magnesium is one of the minerals that are critical for our body function.
• Many people think of supplements and diet as upper and downers; however, many things can be both simultaneously.
• For instance, green tea can have caffeine and a calming effect. 
• Theobromine and magnesium are great for balanced energy and balanced performance.

• Your gut is severely disrupted if you have indigestion and acid reflux. However, you shouldn’t run away from plants and compounds.

• Eliminating and reintroducing one plant at a time will help determine how your body responds to the plant. 
• Once you get better at recognizing your body, you also start to spot symptoms when they're subtle.
• Intuitive eating is a great way to see how your body responds to plants. 
• When introducing a plant, consume it on an empty stomach to see how you respond. 

[32:30] Will Mushrooms and Coffee Break Your Fast? 

• If you want to do a pure fast, you’re giving your liver a complete break. If that’s the case, you shouldn’t consume mushrooms. 
• If you’re still processing coffee and green tea, mushrooms wouldn’t break your fast.
• Mushrooms won’t spike your insulin if you’re just doing a water fast, but it’s technically breaking your fast since it is not water. 
• Mushrooms are one more thing that your body must digest even though it doesn’t contain calories.

[41:00] The Best Mushrooms For Deeper Sleep and Improved Mood 

• Mushrooms and adaptogens will impact the mind. If you’re in a good mood, you will sleep better.
• Reishi mushrooms are great for sleep.
• Another mushroom that is famous for improving sleep is ashwagandha. 
• Many adaptogens will improve your stress levels. When you’re stress levels are improved, your sleep will improve.
• If you want deeper sleep, reisihi and ashwagandha will help you immensely. 

[48:55] Chaga For Longevity: An Anti-Aging Powerhouse 

• A healthy body is likelier to live a long time. 
• Avoiding illness will help protect your body in the long run.
• Chaga mushrooms tend to be great for longevity. 
• Chaga is an adaptogenic fungus with very high amounts of superoxide dismutase.
