The first half of the book deals with people i call tropical returners, or ex colonials. The costs of empire and what it takes to be a part of that imperial machine are very different. I mean, how else do we get quinine? I if it's not for the umpire? Nding on climbing, class isn't an important element because there are stories in the books of very working class soldiers who are drafted into the army as they have no other choice.
