Mao Zedong and the CCP
Mao Zedong was in Shanghai when the first party congress took place on July 1, 1921. It's 90 years later today that China is celebrating this historic event. The CCP could be said to have been founded but Mao didn't take part in this founding of the party. In August 1920, the party is informally set up and a provisional central body is created to sort of hold it all together until a formal party congress could be held. This date is emphasized as the real launching point for the Chinese Communist Party.
