The Boston School Committee's Response to the 14th Amendment
In 1974, the Boston School Committee refused to reclassify 670 Chinese students as white. The NAACP stepped in and charged the school committee with violating the 14th Amendment. General Judge Arthur Garrity ordered that the school committee come up with a plan by September 1974. He then put the schools in federal receivership and imposed his own solution.
