Colonial police forces cracked down on dissidence and insurgency. They do so often by a working through networks of local formance. And the revolutionaries themselves are very aware of this, and it's the sort of cat and mouse game that each play with the other. For example, one of the the most famous of these characters, hochimin, first comes on the radar of the police in france in 19 19. But they track him henceforth for the rest of his life. He emerges as a national leader at the end of the second war, world war under the name Hochimin.
