Should the United States Defend Tiwan?
Sisbiden's comments were strategically deployed. I think he was sending a clear message to the chinese that they should understand we will fight and die for wan. The reputational effects on or alliance structure in east asia would be disastrous if we abandoned tiwan. We are de facto committed to defending tiwan. If we walked away, the japanese, the south koreans, the australians would not be able to rely on the united states. And this is especially true in the case of japan. One does not underestimate the extent to which the japans think that maintaining ti wan is of great strategic importance.
