By 1960 the Shah's Iran was a founding member of OPEC. High oil prices were essential to funding the white revolution. And then even more recently, you know, in recent years, it's been at the center of the conflict between the U.S. and Iran over the nuclear program. Homany: This whole discourse of sovereign rights does become part of the dominant lexicon of powers in the global south.
