In 18 16, jacob and wilhelm grimm, the brothers grimm, bished a collection of fairy tales called di kinder zuhamen. This appears as folk tale number two forty four in volume one. It later became folk tale nuber two forty five. And this was in a doce sagen, or german legend. They intended to create this distinction between the household fairy tales we all know, told in past, down from generation to generation,. and legends that had some real connection to a time and place. The most popular versions of the pied piper legend are the brother's version and robert browning's poem.
