In early modern England, breastfeeding would have been something that was very visible. The Renaissance depiction of the Virgin Feeding Christ dates back far more than 5000 years. In some ways it is a modern construction, but again, it's context dependent. Even that just snapshot of a couple of centuries in Italy reveals so much about how quickly ideas can change.
