The History of the Seljuk Sultanate
Before the Crusades, northern Syria and much of the Holy Land region was conquered by a very rapidly expanding empire called the Seljuk Sultanate. The Seljuk Turks also pushed southwest towards Egypt. And Jerusalem itself is right on the front line between the SelJuk Turks and the Fatimids. So the area itself is a war zone as the first crusaders arrive.
