The Early Spies and Spies of the Second World War
MI5 didn't recruit men from university until the Second World War. But it's whoever they fear would be helpful for the job. Women were recruited from well-educated backgrounds, often higher classes of society. If you've got to know somebody or perhaps be a debutante, it's all about informal networks. Most early spies and spy masters had served in uniform attached to the Intelligence Corps in wartime. They were military-style gentlemen not the likes of who we would think Kim Phil being recruitment from universities.
