The Impact of Vague Language on Performance
The one of the biggest vague ones we hear athletes say, is try. My first Masters in sports psych was my thesis on imagery. There's research out there on athletes like Jean Claude Keeley who they put electrodes on his thighs and then ran him visually through the race courses. And what they showed was that the muscles were actually firing just from visualizing the race. So if you've got certainty in your language, then your muscles react in fire properly. You have uncertainty if your vague are those muscles even fired. The reason why visualization works is it's very clear. It's very context driven,. And it's very specific. We need to eliminate words like try it. I will.
