The Grand Tour - A Great Idea
The grand tour is interesting and this is an aristocratic phenomenon. You only get to go to Gallivanting Rand Europe as a young 18th century man, if you have plenty of money. It opens up Europe as a site of tourism before that possibility is closed down completely by war on the European continent. So then for over a decade, two decades really, it's impossible in places like Italy and France.
