The Viking Age and the Vikings
The earliest interactions that we're aware of between scandinavia and francia actually predate the viking age by many centuries. Scandinavia is already a conduit of communication and commerce well before any viking activity is even attested. And i think that all these kinds of contacts combined would have made scandinavians very aware of their neighbours to the south. They would have had quite detailed knowledge about where certain goods came from, and where movable wealth was being gathered. So that kind of information may have been remembered, and it may have been hof kept up to date. And later, it would have been put to good use when we do start to see vikings
