The Enslavement of Native American Peoples

There's been an upsurge in scholarly literature on the enslavement of indigenous peoples. Around a million people are enslaved before 1600 alone, four to five million by 1900. The extent of that becomes much murkier as I say after 1542 when new laws makes indigenous slavery illegal. But it still does carry on in Spanish territories and it's not banned in Portuguese territories to much later or in British territories at all really.
