The Slow Transition to Emancipation
British parliament passed act of abolition in 1833, it took effect on August 1, 1834. It transitioned enslaved people into apprentices; that's how they became known as legally. Apprentices had to stay working in their previous arrangements so they were still working in plantations or cities and towns for their previous owners.
