The Writing of History by Monks and Abbots

There is nowhere any indication that writing should be part of the daily duty of a monk, an abbot, a nun or an abbess. Some write history to provide their communities with a written version of the past and their place in it. Others write even more wide ranging universal histories and nicles. And so there's a whole range of histories that these abbots write. The motivations are as individual as they are for any other type of writing.
