Gender Gap in Patents

In 1641, Samuel Winslow was granted the first patent in North America for a new process for making salt. The modern French patent system was created during the revolution in 1791. In the U.S., women were historically precluded from obtaining patents. This historical gender gap has lessened over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries but disparity is still prevalent. A patent does not give a right to make or use or sell an invention. Rather, it provides the right to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing the patent invention.
