How Douglas Douglas Came to the UK in 1835
The American context is really interesting because he has all these opportunities that free black people at the time are only just starting to really experience. And so part of my kind of detective work as an historian is trying to figure out how did he get from America to the UK? That's a pretty big leap. So Douglas likely comes to the UK working for his passage on a trading vessel. He's in rye in 1835 and he's nabbed by the police, caught red-handed in the middle of a theft. This is the real turning point of his life.
