It is likely that eventually those shut ins will orode. It might take thousands of years, but we can get a little bit of insight over a couple of years to get a sense of how quickly that might be happening. So these rocks are just harder than the rocks around them, which has allowed them to sustain their shape a more easily than other stretches of the river. In a really big flood, you can even rip up whole pieces of rock from the bed and change em, change the river a lot more drastically.
