The Tudor Ideal of Self-Sufficiency

Tailors did a seven year apprenticeship and then served as journeymen to practice their trade. The tailors particular strength was in his expertise at cutting, cutting the fabric efficiently for garments. Wool was what the tailor worked with and of course more expensive fabrics like silks and satins. So most people did not make their own clothes. It wasn't the sort of Tudor ideal we sometimes imagine with everyone being self-sufficient on their little farm.
