What Are the Resources of the Common Land?
We tend to think of common land as empty land, but it's not and never has been unused land. The resources of the common are complementary to the resources of the farmland. Most important of these is fuel, fuel for the fire - this varies depending on the environment. In wetland areas, in fenland areas, people were digging peat,. And indeed in upland areas like the Péline moors and so on. But how the common was actually used was determined by local custom.
