They got land grants and had haciendas and did things the way the sort of feudal system of mexico was set up at the time. The missions in santa barbara were on mexican land when they were established. And there's a little bit of a during the run up to the civil war, one of the really serious questions was what to do with this land we got from the so called mexican american war - should it be slave or not
