The LEAP Study on Amputations
The LEAP study found no difference between amputations and reconstruction at two years in limb-threatening injuries. The METALS study noted that more severe limbs were going into the salvage pathway, despite the military population having better access to prostheses. A vascular patient with an above knee amputation will have the slowest self-directed walking speed and highest relative energy costs while utilizing a prosthesis.
