Historians had to rely on his orical sources to come up with a biological diagnosis. Some mediaeval sources seem to quite clearly describe symptoms that suggested esiniopestis, others muddied the water somewhat. After decades of piecing together the story of the plague from historical records, development in genetics appeared like a hammer blow and led them to reassess their work.
