Throughout the ninth century, we actually see quite a diverse repertoire of counter measures put in place by frankish rulers to ward off viking activity. This didn't just involve walls around settlements, although that certainly happened as well. Very notably, it also included the building of fortified bridges across major rivers to block the up stream movement of viking fleets.
