Are Fortifications Being Built?
Throughout the ninth century, we actually see quite a diverse repertoire of counter measures put in place by frankish rulers to ward off viking activity. This didn't just involve walls around settlements, although that certainly happened as well. Very notably, it also included the building of fortified bridges across major rivers to block the up stream movement of viking fleets. And this was something that was actively encouraged by charles the bald, who was kingo western francia at the time. He had at least two of these bridges built that we know of.
