The Importance of Free University Education in West Germany

In East Germany you had not only kind of free university education but also you were given sort of scholarships and things like that to just live off. They also depended on your actual achievements so if you were particularly good at something you'd actually get more money from the state to study. So there were definitely some people who were offered more opportunity under this regime than they might have been in West Germany for example. By 1990 it's still a tiny minority of West German students come from not from kind of upper middle class backgrounds.
