The Shift Between Frequentist and Bayesian Statistics
In the 80s and 90s, there was a move away from frequentism. Bayesian statistics can't really make probabilistic statements about individual events. The theory of probability lends itself to automation in a way that frequentism doesn't necessarily. And so because you can just keep taking in new data and updating your belief, it works really well for recommender systems.
