The Journeys of the Israelites

The first 49 verses fall into a genre that's known as the itinerary genre. This basically means that it's going to be a record of the places where they journeyed from and to. And this particular way of describing, traveling, or journeying is not unique to numbers chapter 33. There are documents from Assyria that date to around the ninth centuries. They have an itinerary genre that's very similar to exactly what we find here in the book of numbers.
