The biggest difference in terms of the short run between s&p 500 and buying the cash is the actual amount of margin that you have to put up. If you're a foreigner and you're getting dividends that are coming in from the index then you'll probably be better off in the futures. There just be no reason to go and own the 500 and it's actually 503 everyone thinks it's 500 it doesn't necessarily mean that the stocks are going to rise or fall.
