But what really happened quite clearly is a lot more surplus in the hands of the elite and how do we know this? Because they built not just churches, they built cathedrals, massive cathedrals,. Quite complicated constructions. They persuaded the peasants with the theology with the cathedrals with the religion of the time that they should surrender all of their surplus to the Lords who lived just fine for conditions of the time.
