The Post-War Golden Age of the Workplace
The idea that we have of a kind of post-war golden age, which just gets kind of unfortunately truncated or interrupted at the end of the 70s, misrepresents the experience of blue color workers. I tell a story in the book about a welder who kept losing his lunch and paper bag to rats for weeks after he first got his job. And when he told me, he told me that as if it was nothing, but it really really stuck with me 10 years later.
