For many centuries the prime means of long distance transport was by water. Sailing ships on the ocean can all boats and steamboats for inland navigation. Folk songs talked about the ship as both means of escape, means of making a living and in some senses as a trap. In the 19th century the railway was invented and at least as far as travel within a land mass goes it replaced the steamboat in the popular imaginary. Now the railway was how you got from place to place and how you moved freight from one place to another.
