After years immersed in the deep end of ufology, one question has proven impossible to shake: how is it that certain factions of the intelligence community—people who possess more evidence than most that consciousness survives death, that the soul is real, and that we are more than our physical bodies—so consistently engage in profound acts of moral evil?

This Field Notes episode explores the contradiction at the heart of anomalous research: the same fundamental knowledge about non-material reality that tends to moralize everyday experiencers, deepening their compassion, ethical sensitivity, and sense of consequence, appears to have the opposite effect in certain institutionalized contexts.
