Gone Medieval

Introduction

The first of january was the beginning of a new year under the julian calendar, introduced by julius caesar in forty six b c e. The roman empire's annual cycle used the date for a moment known as calens, a term that continues in use throughout the mediaeval period. Mediaeval england most often celebrated new year on a different date. From around the middle of the twelfth century until the adoption of the gregorian calendar in 17 52, new year in england was celebrated on the 20 fifth of march. This date was lady day, or the feast of the enunciation of our lord to the blessed virgin mary.
